Ched Myers is an American theologian specializing in biblical studies and political theology Career The book was one of the earliest commentaries to take an empire-critical view, a view that was marginal in the s, but is now widely accepted within the academy. Proclamation 6, Year B, Pentecost 1. Minneapolis: Augsburg/tion: Theologian. Texts: Acts + Psalm ,35b + 1 Cor. b + John You can imagine that it must have already been a somewhat terrifying moment. All the believers were together, numbering about a hundred and twenty (which, as a point of comparison, is about how many people we have here at St. Luke’s if everyone from both services were to show up at once), when some kind of divine.

"Pentecost" is a Greek word, transliterated into English, that means fiftieth. This feast fell on the fiftieth day after Passover. It was one of the feasts at which all the male Jews had to be present at the central sanctuary (Exodus ). Jews who lived up to20 miles from Jerusalem were expected to travel to Jerusalem to attend these feasts. It is found only six times in the Book of Acts and eight times in the rest of the New Testament. On the other hand, the term“church”occurs only twice in the Gospels, both times in Matthew (; ), while it is found 19 times in Acts, and 88 times in the epistles. One is therefore obliged to explain this transition.

Pentecost is a transliteration of the Greek word pentekoste (from pente = five, cf "Pentateuch" = first five books) and literally means "fiftieth, because this feast is to take place annually 50 days after Passover. Pentecost is used only three times in the NT (Acts , Acts , 1 Cor ). This specific word is not found in the Septuagint. Sermons on Revelation From the Book of Revelation series, "Decision Time" looks at Revelation chapter It looks at ,, the proclamation and work of the angel's sent by God to proclamation the gospel as well as the doom of Babylon and the coming judgment of the earth.

Going systematically house to house preaching to whomever will listen (Acts ) (Acts ). In the American Standard Version of Acts there are fifty-six references to the Holy Spirit. The combined sixty-eight chapters of the Synoptic Gospels contain only thirty-four references to the Holy Spirit. The Book of Numbers (p. Grand Rapids, MI: Wm.

When we get to week seven we go all the way back to chapter one before closing out the season in chapter two on Pentecost. Because of all this skipping around, I think it is important to place the reading for today in the larger framework of the story told in Acts, and to orient ourselves to the book as a whole as we begin this series.

Over the last six months we have heard about Jesus: Jesus being born in a manger, hearing who Jesus was, hearing what Jesus came to do, hearing about Jesus dying.

Now, the sower of the good seed is the Son of Man, Jesus. The field is the world or literally the cosmos. The good seed is the sons of the kingdom – God’s children, heirs of Christ, who like Paul says in Romans 8 are adopted by grace and receive the Holy Spirit.
